Mt. Ololokwe Hike: Summit Camping in Samburu
Trip details
Drive north past Isiolo and Archer's Post and a huge flat-topped mountain appears on the horizon, its sheer red cliffs rising straight out of the Samburu plains. This is Mt. Ololokwe, also called Ol Donyo Sabache, and it is one of the most striking landmarks in northern Kenya. Ololokwe is sacred to the Samburu people, and you'll climb it with local guides who know every turn of the trail. We spend the night at Sabache Camp, right at the foot of the mountain, sharing dinner around the campfire far from city lights. Long before dawn, we set off by headlamp and climb through bush and rocky ground towards the summit plateau. The goal is simple: be on top when the sun comes up over northern Kenya, and watch the plains light up below you. The hike is moderate and suits fit beginners and children aged 7 and above. Transport, entry fees, local guides, a first aider, fruit and water refills are included. Bring a warm layer for the summit, because it's cold before sunrise.
