Nairobi to Rwanda Overland Adventure
10 days, 9 nights by road through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda
Trip details
Some places are worth the long way round. This overland adventure swaps the airport for the open road, taking you from Nairobi across western Kenya and Uganda to Rwanda, the Land of a Thousand Hills. The journey is part of the experience: border crossings, roadside snacks, music on the bus and a new landscape every few hours. On the way there you'll see the source of the Nile at Jinja, stand on the equator in Uganda and spend a night on Lake Bunyonyi, a beautiful lake of terraced hills and small islands near the Rwandan border. Then it's into Rwanda, where the roads are smooth, the hills roll on forever and the cities are famously clean. In Kigali we take time to understand the country's story at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then explore the lively side of the capital at Kimironko Market, the art studios and the cafes. From there we head south to the King's Palace at Nyanza, then into Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa's oldest rainforests, to walk the canopy bridge high above the trees. The final stretch follows the shores of Lake Kivu, with a boat trip among its islands and an evening on the beach at Rubavu, before we roll back home through Uganda. All meals, accommodation, entry fees, guided tours, photography and a Safarizuru trip leader are included, so all you need to bring is your passport or ID, a sense of adventure and good company.
